Growing popularity
People living in the countryside or the mountains traditionally wore leather breeches. The German upper class eventually adopted these garments as suitable outdoor clothing for riding and hunting.

As the 19th century progressed, people increasingly favored wearing jeans and other types of pants popular in France. But now it seems that German lederhosen are making a comeback.
People living in rural areas, who often depend on their own labor and that of their families, continued to wear the leather breeches known as lederhosen. As the German lederhosen fell out of fashion in mountainous regions and the countryside, jeans became popular.
The origins of lederhosen are a bit hazy. While it’s not known who invented them, Germany is a likely candidate for their creation, as this country has been known to invent all kinds of things. Despite its popularity in Germany, there is also a significant history of German lederhosen not being worn.
